Some basic stuff: I grew up in Edmonton and Vancouver. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada, and graduate degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. After working in the traffic consulting industry (engineering and planning) for four years in California and British Columbia, I returned to Berkeley in 2006 to pursue a Ph.D., which I completed in Spring 2011. See Research for a description of my research interests.
In my free time I like to be outdoors as much as possible, unless I'm reading (especially crime/noir/old pulp fiction), at the symphony, or in a used bookstore. Like most people I like to do a lot of things; my list includes skiing, running, hiking, backpacking, biking around town, or just going for walks with our sweet and energetic puppy. Discovering the many trails through the City of Edmonton has been really fun, and I'm hoping to take up cross country skiing for the winter. I'm constantly on the search for a good bowl of pho.
Other random factoids about me:
~ I was an enormously fat baby. My pediatrician purportedly instructed my parents to put me on 2% milk instead of whole because I was getting so fat.
~ I tried to walk home from school in a blizzard when I was 5 years old. I had the good sense to turn back.
~ I have a performer's diploma in classical piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada. I love music in general, but I particularly like the Baroque era and chamber music.
~ I like looking at art, particularly contemporary stuff. I don't really care to dissect what I see, but I love the original ideas and perspectives, and the way someone's creative expression can make you feel.
